3D Printing - A Step Towards the Future
3D Printing, also known as Additive Manufacturing, is the printing/manufacturing of 3D objects, anywhere as small as living cells or as large as a building. Whether done at a large industrial corporate level or at individual consumer/hobbyist level, 3D Printing offers a host of benefits that traditional manufacturing methods (or prototyping) simply cannot provide:
- Speed & Affordability – At a large-scale manufacturing level, companies enjoy savings, both when it comes to speed and to money.
- Customizable – 3D printing processes allow for mass customization — the ability to personalize products according to individual needs and requirements.
- Complexity – Today’s 3D printers allow for printing of incredibly complex designs; designs that couldn't be produced by "traditional" manufacturing methods. These complex designs run from those used in aerospace to artistic models. An added benefit of complex designs could be the creation of lighter and stronger products, thereby resulting in a smaller carbon footprint than with traditionally manufactured products.
- Less Wasteful & More Energy-Efficient – In traditional manufacturing (subtractive manufacturing processes like milling, lathing, and cutting), much of the material is cut away and not used. Additive Manufacturing (3D Printing) eliminates most of that waste and requires less energy to produce. Additionally, 3D printing holds the promise of fulfilling a local manufacturing model, where products are produced on demand in the place where they are needed — eliminating huge inventories and unsustainable logistics for shipping high volumes of products around the world.
- New Business Models – 3D printing has spawned a new on-demand manufacturing industry. Online stores allow you to upload your 3D model, or choose from pre-created models, choose your colors and materials, and then have the printed models delivered to you.
